Signs of Teething

These cute little teeth belong to my 6 month old,  Eliana

If your a first time mom, you may not know ,just yet, what each cry means. When it comes to teething, there are cries, fevers and many other symptoms that may catch you off guard and may even  frighten you if you don't know what they are from. Teething happens for all babies at different times. My son had 4 teeth by 6 moths and the same goes for my daughter. I wasn't exactly sure of the signs of teething with Elijah (5 years old), but with Eliana (6 months) I know what to look for.

If your not sure, want to prepare yourself, or your just curious about what signs to look out for here are some sign and symptoms that indicate teething.

*remember all babies are different and develop at their own pace*

  • Baby may be very cranky and seemingly hard to please
  • Fever (less than 102) *if the fever is over 102oF it is not associated with teething
  • Increased drooling. I currently have a drool machine *she has 2 more teeth coming in*
  • If you baby is eating solids, she may have a decrease in appetite. She may want more liquids
  • Increase in biting. Baby may be chewing on her fingers or anything else she can get her hands on
  • Baby may also be sucking on her hands and other objects in reach
  • A runny nose is associated with teething believe it or not
  • Swollen gums
Teething can be painful for your baby, but it is nothing to be afraid of. Teething can start as early as 13 weeks (3 months). It is important to remain calm during the duration of teething. Your baby will need you. Some things you can do for your baby once she starts teething are:

  • Get teething rings (they work well when cooled in the refrigerator before given to baby)
  • Try placing a wet wash cloth in a Ziploc bag and putting it in the refrigerator *for an added touch, soak the washcloth in chamomile tea* for fussiness, it can calm baby
  • Orajel for babies
  • Be patient with the baby and keep calm

You can do it.
